How Do Drugs Actually Work?

What do you think: Is Alcohol Use a Global Public Health Impact?

First of all, it is very important to say there are many people around the world that are addicted to alcohol. The addiction to alcohol is one of the major causes of death in people around the world, either directly, through such things as liver diseases and other organs, and also behavior change; or indirectly through car accidents.
I work every day with people that are doing all things possible to stop using alcohol, but I see how difficult it’s for each person. There are several strategies for facing and resolving this major problem, such as treatment with health staff, medication, family support, treatment in rehabilitation clinic, hospital admission and inpatient in therapeutic communities.
I understand there are three main elements for the successful treatment: personal motivation, a support network (professionals, families and communities), and the determination to change habits.
The addiction to alcohol can affect several areas in people’s lives, such as social, familial, professional, personal and financial, with different impacts and consequences.
I believe everyone should know more about the effects of alcohol so after they reflect on the use and abuse, and they can make informed decision.

The Adventures of a brave Girl

This story started on a small farm in the interior of the city of São Lourenço D’ Oeste, in Brazil. On this farm lived a family, and the youngest daughter that was 9 years old wanted to live alone and to be independent. She had one brother and one sister.

One day, this girl thought that to live with her parents wasn’t good, and then she decided to go away to another place. She didn`t know where, but she wanted to try. Then, the girl picked up some things like clothes and shoes, put them in a bag and left. She also took the clothes that her godmother had made for her. Her mother saw, but she didn’t say anything. The girl thought that she knew what was best for her. The girl walked for some hours aimlessly, she was hungry and thirsty, but she didn’t have any food or drink. Furthermore, the weather was getting dark, the wind very cold and she heard some strange noises on the way. She didn’t see anybody she could ask for help. She was really scared and frightened. So she stopped and thought: “Why am I doing it?” and “Where am I going?” Then she remembered her mother and started to cry. In this moment, she reflected on this and decided to come back to her house, her family. Her mother was waiting for her at the door. When the mom saw her daughter she said: “I knew that you would come back.”  The mom smiled and hugged her daughter. The girl also was kissed by her father. The mother made a delicious meal for them, especially her favorite food, risotto. Really the smell was wonderful and the girl was very glad. When she saw her whole family around her, she felt much loved by them.

Meanwhile, the girl was thinking about the events of the day and how it was good to be with her family.

So, she learned that is very important to live with her family and to be protected by them, moreover respect for the family is essential.

This story is very interesting and important because it repeats over the years. When she was 11 years old, she went to live with her godparents, away from her parents. Then in that moment she realized that living away from her family was very difficult. She missed her family, her house and her friends. She was just a girl! But she got over it and lived for ten years with her godparents in the city. During this time, she worked and studied. Meantime, she gained a second family, a special family! She believes that time was essential for her to gain knowledge and life experience.

After this time, when she was 20 years old, she went to Florianopolis, because she joined the faculty at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. During college time she studied and worked in the hospital.

In Florianopolis, when she finished her faculty, soon after, she started to work as a nurse. She has been working as a nurse for 6 years, in the University Hospital, and for the City of Florianopolis she has worked for 5 years. She has been living in Florianopolis for 11 years, and again she is living away from her family, but now too far, around 7 hours by car. The girl really likes this city. She has worked hard and she feels accomplished in her projects.

Then, during her work in Brazil, she had the opportunity to enter in the Humphrey Fellow Program. She felt fear and insecurity due to the foreign tongue and also because she had never traveled to another country, but she decided to face the challenge and overcome her fears. She knew that again she would stay away from her family, only this time in another country, in the United States, much further from her country and her family. She did not know why, but something told her that she would meet amazing people in her “new country.”

So, she understands all of this, such as personal development and life experience. She learned a lot over these experiences, difficulties and opportunities.

In fact, something told her that she could grow personally and professionally and become a good person and a good professional.

She learned that from an early age she knew what she wanted for her life and that she would face many difficulties to get here today.

But all that effort was worth it, because she is very happy and she knows her family and friends are also, and here, definitely there are many amazing people.

The Garden City Brewfest

The Garden City Brewfest happens every year in Missoula and this is already a popular event in this city. This year, the event happened last Saturday, May 4. Many people each year give prestige to the event and want to taste the different flavors of beer. There are many types of beer, and each person can choose the one. People here usually go to the event with friends and families. We don't see people drunk or people doing noise or sick. We can see people enjoying the event, talking with other people and meeting new people.
The beers are made here in Missoula, but also in cities and states near Missoula. We can find dark and light beers and each one these have different flavors and preparation. Besides the beer, the public can enjoy different types of food. During the event, there is presentation of local bands in various musical genres. There are also prizes for the best beers. The mood of the party is very social, friendly and quiet.
If you don’t know the event, don’t forget to enter the site and make the schedule for next year.

A Trip in the Greenough Park

In the last Thursday, May 2, the students from English level 3/ELI with the teacher Sara Schroeder went to a special place: Greenough Park. Our class in this day happened in the Park and all the students were dressed in comfortable clothes and shoes. We walked in the park and we were bordering the river. The river’s water was very clear and blue. The day was amazing, the bright sunshine and the weather were very good. After we stopped among the trees and we sat to eat some sweets. We took amazing pictures.
Certainly we learned more about one part of this city. I think is very important for our apprenticeship to do different experiences in class and to learn and to live in the language. If you are curious about the place, you should look at our pictures and to enter in the site below.

My parents!

These are my father and my mother! This picture was taken some days before I came here to Missoula. On this day my whole family was together celebrating my victory about the Humphrey Fellowship Program.
My brother made special food for us and on this day we also celebrated my parents' birthday.
Really, it was an amazing day! It is in my memory and in my heart. I saw and I felt a lot of pride in my parents' eyes and they kept telling me that they were very glad with me.
I understand, because I had many difficulties during my life and my parents know exactly what all these things mean to me. They know, in their way, how important this opportunity is for me and how I dreamed about it.
Now, every time I talk to my parents, they tell me how happy they are.
I've been learning some essential points about family. First of all is about the parents' love and parents' confidence, because they're capable of loving their children unconditionally and giving them a lot of love. The second point is about the distance, because it isn't able to separate family. So, finally, I believe that if you are happy and you are doing something important to you, I'm sure that your parents are also happy.
However, during our lives, we meet some special people who are very important to us, so these people become part of our family!
Here, in Missoula I have a special family: my teachers, my classmates and the coordinators. So, I have many reasons to smile!
